On November 7, 2025, the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) published the "Pesticide Residues in Food Report".
Food regulatory authorities across EU member states monitor pesticide residues in food to ensure they do not exceed EU-set limits and thus prevent health risks. In 2023 (the latest reporting year), a total of 133,000 food samples were collected from the EU, Iceland, and Norway, covering foods from all continents.
Key findings:
- 98% of samples complied with EU maximum residue levels (MRLs)
- 58% of samples showed no quantifiable pesticide residues
- The compliance rate has remained consistently high and stable over the past decade, averaging 97.8%
Sample origins:
- 54% from EU member states
- 4% from unknown sources
- 42% from outside the European Economic Area
When samples fail to comply:
- Border interception: EFSA can block the food batch at EU borders
- Penalties: EFSA can impose sanctions such as fines
- Product recall: In severe cases, products can be withdrawn from the market and/or warnings issued to consumers with compensation provided
