Summary:
Australia has notified the World Trade Organization (WTO) of proposed amendments to Schedule 20 of the Australia New Zealand Food Standards Code to revise Maximum Residue Limits (MRLs) for various agricultural and veterinary chemicals. Concurrently, the Australian Pesticides and Veterinary Medicines Authority (APVMA) has suspended over 70 second-generation anticoagulant rodenticide products for one year due to unacceptable risks to non-target animals.
Full Update:
On March 19, 2026, Australia submitted a notification to the World Trade Organization (WTO) proposing amendments to Schedule 20 of the Australia New Zealand Food Standards Code. The revisions aim to adjust Maximum Residue Limits (MRLs) for several agricultural and veterinary chemicals—including azoxystrobin, chlorfenapyr, and cyclobutrifluram—in plant and animal commodities to align with domestic safe-use regulations.
In parallel, the Australian Pesticides and Veterinary Medicines Authority (APVMA) published Gazette No. 5, announcing significant regulatory actions:
- Suspension of Second-Generation Anticoagulant Rodenticides: More than 70 products containing active ingredients such as brodifacoum and bromadiolone have been suspended for a period of one year. The APVMA determined that these products pose an unacceptable risk of secondary poisoning to non-target animals, including raptors and domestic pets. Under the new requirements, household rodenticide use is restricted to indoor applications only, and the use of tamper-resistant bait stations is now mandatory.
- Registration of New Products: The gazette also approved the registration of several new agricultural and veterinary chemical products.
- Safety Assessments Initiated: Safety assessments have commenced for two new active ingredients—the veterinary medicine Atinvicitinib and a recombinant canine parvovirus vaccine strain.
Stakeholders may submit comments on the proposed MRL amendments until May 18, 2026.
